Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
